Blood Cell Container for Cord Blood

A three-dimensional compartmentalized bag configured to provide cryopreservation for blood cells, including stem-cell rich fractions, is the subject of a recently issued U.S. patent.

The patent, the third in a series, was received by ThermoGenesis Corp. (Rancho Cordova, CA, USA), which developed the bag as part of its BioArchive system of devices and disposals utilized by cord blood banks.

"The configuration of this cryopreservation container was designed for optimal cell viability during cryogenic freezing, and its multicompartment design permits ex vivo expansion of the cryopreserved cells without compromising the sterility of the remainder,” explained Kevin Simpson, president and COO of ThermoGenesis.

The BioArchive system is a computer-driven robotic system that allows users to cryopreserve and archive up to 3,626 units of blood components in -196oC liquid nitrogen. The system can cryopreserve, archive, and retrieve samples within liquid nitrogen without exposing the samples to detrimental transient warming events (TWE), which can reduce cell viability.
