The 2004 Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year Awards are now open for entry, the company has announced (Oxoid, Basingstoke, UK).

The first prize, a check for £5,000 (about U.S.$9,015) and a trophy, will allow the winning team the freedom to choose how they should be rewarded, whether with a team-building event, training, or perhaps they will use the money to cover travel expenses to conferences and seminars of interest. The second and third prize winners will receive framed winners' certificates and £1,000 (about $1803) and £500 (about $900), respectively. Representatives from the award-winning teams will be invited to receive their prizes at a celebratory dinner to be held in the summer of 2005.

The closing date for award entries is February 2005. To enter, applicants should provide a summary (maximum 2,000 words) explaining the infection-control challenges faced in their hospitals and how team members responded to these challenges. They should describe the results of their work and how it has made a difference to their patients and hospitals. Entry guidelines can be found on the website (www.oxoid.com).

The awards were launched by Oxoid in 2003, and are designed to recognize and reward those who are making a real difference to improve standards of infection control within hospitals worldwide. The 2003 awards received more than 50 entries from 15 countries. The 2003 winner of the first prize was a team from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole National Health Service Hospitals Trust (UK).
