A reference laboratory has focused on information technology (IT) to develop new applications for an integration platform that will help to leverage enterprise-wide information.Posted on 18 Nov 2004
Athena Diagnostics (Worcester, MA, USA), a reference laboratory specializing in the development and commercialization of diagnostic testing for neurologic disorders, selected the Ensemble universal integration platform of InterSystems Corp. (Cambridge, MA, USA) and then designed three new applications for the platform.
These applications include an E-System Management Alarm that monitors key systems, displays results on a graphical dashboard and automatically notifies staff via a cellphone if specified parameters are exceeded. Another application is an E-Letter Manager that integrates information from a lab information system with Microsoft Office to automatically create letters that deliver results to diagnostic customers. The third application is an E-Data Coordination Manager that verifies customer information stored on multiple internal databases against information from multiple public websites to automatically eliminate duplicates and data inconsistencies. A new application in the works is called E-Notification, which will automatically recognize changes in the status of lab tests stored in the management information system.
"We're focusing on delivering the highest level of response to our customers,” noted Mark Smith, vice president of information technology at Athena Diagnostics. "E-Notification will ensure delivery of the latest information as well as dramatically reduce the volume of calls to our call center.”
