Forensic Workstation for DNA Analysis

A new forensic workstation designed for use in criminal DNA analysis will allow the forensic community to increase productivity by up to 10 times, eliminate human error, greatly reduce cross-contamination, and yield high-quality purified human DNA.

The workstation, called MultiProbe II, performs automated DNA processing procedures requiring isolation, quantification setup (QPCR), normalization and dilution, and typing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) setup. An onboard liquid-handling system based on leading technology together with the benefit of bundled forensic application options provide complete walk-away automation of forensic DNA analysis. The workstation is the product of PerkinElmer, Inc. (Boston, USA).

PerkinElmer developed the workstation in response to new U.S. legislation that will make postconviction DNA testing available to everybody declaring their innocence in federal cases. Currently, there is a backlog of 350,000 untested evidence samples in various criminal cases. The use of DNA evidence has so far exonerated 151 individuals convicted of serious crimes.
