Diabetes Test Measures C-Peptide Levels

A new blood test measures levels of C-peptide in blood, which are about five to six times greater than insulin levels and more stable.

Measurement of C-peptide levels allows doctors to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This measurement can also indicate the need for progression to insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes. In addition, it can be used to determine the cause of hypoglycemia, and to monitor recovery after the removal of an insulin-producing tumor of the pancreas. Furthermore, a recent study has linked elevated levels of C-peptide with an increased risk of colorectal cancer in men with diabetes.
