Clinical studies have demonstrated that specific and consistent patterns of certain antibodies have regularly proven their utility as composite biomarkers to characterize cancer and can therefore be used as diagnostic tests for cancer.
CeMines, Inc. (Golden, CO, USA) uses a proprietary bioinformatics-based, statistical pattern recognition application called Molecular FingerPrinting that evaluates patterns of certain antibodies and the profiles of cancer patients. A study of more than 200 lung cancer patients has demonstrated the utility of this method. Molecular FingerPrinting can discriminate among the biomarker profiles of lung cancer patients, high-risk groups, and heavy smokers. In addition, FingerPrinting showed the ability to discriminate between controls and breast cancer patients, in addition to lung cancer patients, on the same array using a similar set of biomarkers.
The new test based on this method is called CellCorrect Lab. The test employs the use of more than 1,500 biomarkers, in addition to another 700 markers the company believes may have relevance in the discrimination of certain characteristics related to the reproduction of cancer cells. CeMines intends to provide diagnostic data so specific that both doctors and patients will have confidence in it, allowing treatment to begin at a very early stage, perhaps even before the presence of a tumor.
"We believe out approach to diagnostic testing is the only practical approach to achieving an accurate determination of clinical prognosis as well as precise measurement of a patient's response to treatment,” observed Roger Attick, CEO of CeMines. "What is important for healthcare providers to understand is that the presence or absence (in patient sera) of one, two, or even five biomarkers does not provide the specificity and sensitivity necessary to further distinguish other characteristics of cancer, such as pre-cancerous conditions, or the stage to which the disease had progressed.”
