In 2004, a partnership was announced by Siemens Medical Solutions (Erlangen, Germany) and Sequenom, Inc. (San Diego, CA, USA) that would work with reference laboratories to execute a comprehensive functional requirement analysis for a molecular diagnostics platform. Now Bioscientia (Ingelheim, Germany), an international reference laboratory, has joined this collaboration. The company has a staff in excess of 900 professional and technical personnel and provides a pathology reference service to a wide range of institutions.

Sequenom's MassARRAY compact system, a genetic analysis platform, will be installed in Bioscientia's clinical reference laboratory facility to benchmark the system in a molecular diagnostic testing environment. Siemens will contribute project funding and engineering expertise, while Sequenom provides consumables, technical support, and analytically validated assays for specific tests, including deep vein thrombosis and HIV.

"One of the goals of the joint working group is to evaluate the utility of mass spectrometry through benchmarking studies,” noted Mohammad Naraghi, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president of business development at Siemens. "Biocentia has a state-of-the-art molecular genetics analysis laboratory and brings more than 25 years of clinical diagnostic experience to the team.”

Sequenom's system is a high-performance DNA analysis platform that efficiently and precisely measures the amount of genetic target material and variations therein. The system is able to deliver reliable and specific data from complex biologic samples and from genetic target material that is only available in trace amounts.
