Oxoid Awards to Infection Control Teams

The winners of the Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year awards received their prizes recently at a celebratory dinner in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK.

Four teams were presented with prizes by the awards judges and Patrick Roberts, vice president, sales and marketing, Oxoid Ltd. (Basingstoke, UK). First prize of about U.S.$8,800 went to Kingston Hospital NHS Trust (UK), the second prize of $1,700 went to Sanatorio Adventista del Plata (Argentina), and the third prize of $880 went to The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UK). Later in the year, a further Highly Commended prize will be awarded to Juntendo University Hospital in Tokyo (Japan).

This is the second year of the Oxoid awards, and judges commented on how encouraged they were by the standard of entries. There were many examples of excellent practices and falling rates of infection from teams in all parts of the world, including the Netherlands, Serbia, Denmark, Cameroon, Java, India, Russia, Canada, and the UK.

The work presented by many entrants prove that their work is contributing to reductions in infections such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridium difficile, and nosocomial pneumonia, noted Oxoid. Winning entries from Argentina and Japan demonstrated that infection prevention and control is now a global subject, with teams from all over the world sharing their knowledge and best practices.

Entries for the 2005/2006 infection control team awards are welcome from teams around the world. Details will be available in the fall of 2005.
