Tests for Urinary Tract Infection

A new panel of tests is intended for the detection of urinary tract infections.

Called RapID SS/u (site-specific/urine), the easy-to-use enzymatic test is able to identify within two hours the major urinary tract pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Klesbiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Candida albicans.

The RapID SS/u test panel incorporates a carefully selected series of biochemical tests directed towards urinary tract pathogens. As RapID SS/u detects specific constitutive enzymes and is not dependent on the growth of the organism, the panel can be incubated aerobically without the need for oil overlay. This saves both time and materials, simplifying the procedure and allowing further times savings.

Upon completion of the test, identifications are made by using the user-friendly Window's based ERIC (electronic rapid compendium) software, which ranks organism identifications by probability. Accessory tests and methods are offered to resolve any identification overlaps, and reports can be saved or printed, with reporting options that allow the user to track identification patterns and organism trends.

The new panel is the product of Oxoid (Basingstoke, UK). Other Oxoid products that aid in the diagnosis of urinary tract pathogens include several culture media, Chromogenic UTI and Chromogenic Candida Agar; O.B.I.S. albicans, a rapid colormetric test; Dipslides, for sampling urine and enumerating micro-organisms; various products for antimicrobial susceptibility testing; and QC organisms called Culti-Loops.
