Test Detects Peptic Ulcers and Gastric Carcinoma

A new enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) can be used to detect and monitor the presence of peptic ulcers and gastric carcinoma. Called Pepgen, the test determines the amounts of Pepsinogen-1 present in human serum.

The levels of pepsinogen-1 circulating in the blood vary significantly. In patients with peptic ulcers, serum pepsinogen-1 levels are noticeably elevated. In cases of gastric cancer, serum levels of pepsinogen-1 are consistently depressed. Thus, the test can be used to distinguish between peptic ulcers and gastric cancer and to monitor treatment.

"We expect the introduction of the Pepgen test to our distributor base in over 40 countries to enhance the growing acceptance of our other tests as well,” said Fran Capitanio, president of Biomerica (Newport Beach, CA, USA) which developed the test.

Biomerica has developed an extensive line of test products for the clinical laboratory. The new ELISA test can be used in a small laboratory using minimal equipment or can be automated using any ELISA instrument in a larger laboratory.
