POC Glucose Testing

In an era of ever-increasing point-of-care (POC) testing, where less-accurate glucose meters are fast replacing laboratory testing, a new POC system promises more accuracy.

The HemoCue glucose 201 analyzer is a hand-held device that incorporates a small dedicated analyzer and disposable microcuvettes. Employing patented technology and rigorous manufacturing standards, the system combines the precision and accuracy of a laboratory measurement with a speedy turn-around time and ease of use. Results are available within moments. The analyzer is the product of HemoCue AB (Angelholm, Sweden). The 201 analyzer is also available in a model that incorporates data-management capabilities. The analyzer can be used for screening, diagnosing, and monitoring diabetes.

According to the American Diabetes Association, glucose meters should produce test results that are within 5% of laboratory results, but no strip meters now meet that level of accuracy. An international standard is currently under development (ISO DIS 15197) that recommends accuracy of +/- 15 mg/dl for glucose values under 76 mg/dl and +/- 20% for higher glucose values.

The method of use is simple. The microcuvette is applied to a drop of blood--capillary, venous, or arterial--where it automatically draws the correct volume by capillary action. The microcuvette is inserted into the HemoCue instrument and the result is automatically displayed.
