Ten-Minute Disposable Test for Prostate Cancer

A simple 10-minute disposable screening test designed to detect prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has been approved for distribution in Japan.

The one-step test, called EZ-PSA, requires only a drop of whole blood from a finger prick. The blood is applied to the test device, which will indicate within 10 minutes whether the patient's level of PSA is elevated. The approval by the Japanese Ministry of Health followed extensive clinical trials conducted in collaboration with the department of urology at Dokko University School of Medicine and Tokyo University, Diai Memorial Hospital.

The test is the product of Biomerica, Inc. (Newport Beach, CA, USA). "We are very optimistic about this market because the incidence of prostate cancer in Japan has been on the rise over the past ten years, "said Francis E. Capitanio, president of Biomerica Diagnostics. "Our test is disposable, inexpensive, easy to use, and there should be no reason why men do not get tested for this deadly disease on an annual basis.”
