A portable blood gas analyzer designed for point-of-care (POC) use has been launched by Roche Diagnostic Corp. (Basel, Switzerland) for its Opti R Analyzer, completing a full line of blood gas and electrolyte analyzers available on the Opti R.

According to Roche, the Opti R is the only STAT-ready POC analyzer that provides measured total hemoglobin results. Direct measurement of total hemoglobin enhances clinical accuracy, offering a true picture of the patient's condition without the need for laboratory verification. As a result, unnecessary transfusions performed as a result of artificially low conductive hematocrit values are reduced. The Opti R Analyzer serves as an economical auxiliary laboratory, powering up in minutes and providing results in about one minute. Snap-and-Go multi-use reagents simplify operations, while providing reliable results for up to 100 samples.

"Clinicians will benefit from the ability to conduct 25 tests with a single cartridge, while lab managers will appreciate the workflow and cost efficiencies,” said Chris Bosler, director, point of care, Roche Diagnostics.
