Kits Quickly Identify Many Autoimmune Diseases

Four diagnostic kits have been developed that can identify a large number of autoimmune diseases in a very short time.

Biomedical Diagnostics (BMD, Brighton, UK) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared four of its Multiplex diagnostic kits for autoimmune diseases. These kits are the Fidis celiac IgG, Fidis celiac IgA, Fidis connective 10, and Fidis vasculitis. They measure a range of 17 antibodies, which can identify a large number of autoimmune diseases. Used in conjunction with BMD's Fidis multiplex-based diagnostic system, the kits can accurately and clearly measure the profiles of several antibodies after incubation of only one hour.

Fidis Celiac IgG and Fidis Celiac IgA allow the simultaneous measurement of four antibodies: IgA anti-transglutaminase, IgA anti-gliadine, IgG anti-transglutaminase, and IgG anti-gliadine. These antibodies are frequently associated with celiac disease. Individuals with celiac disease are intolerant of gluten.

Fidis Connective 10 identifies and measures in a single run 10 antibodies linked to inflammatory connective tissue diseases. Effecting joints or the intestine, these diseases include lupus erythematosus, Crest syndrome, scleroderma, polymycystosis and Sjögren's syndrome.

Fidis Vasculitis identifies antibodies directed against proteins involved in vasculitis, or inflammation of the lining of the blood vessels such as occurs in arthritis, phlebitis, and lymphangitis.

Dr. Patrick G. Poty, CEO of BMD said that the simultaneous approval of these four kits "comes as BMD is building up its campaign to enter the North American market.” He added, "The FDA go-ahead strengthens BMD's leadership in very high throughput diagnostics in auto-immune diseases.”

BMD is planning to seek FDA approval for three other kits for monitoring or diagnosing other autoimmune diseases, including Grave's disease, Hashimoto's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
