The Olympus (Hamburg, Germany) SZX16 research stereo microscope offers a range of functions, including florescence, micromanipulation, and documentation. With a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.3, and a resolution of 900 pairs per minute, the microscope has a zoom ratio of 16.4:1. Using the zoom mechanism and a range of parfocal objectives (0.5 x, 1.0 x, 1.6 x, and 2.0 x), it is possible to go from examining the whole organism to the cellular level and back with no major adjustments.
For micromanipulation applications, the SZX16 offers enhanced three-dimensional (3D) vision via an increased stereo effect. It has an ultra-slim 44 mm base, a carousel, and a light-emitting diode (LED)-based system, which provides fine control of transmitted illumination for bright and even images.
The SZX10 microscope uses optics for routine applications as well as for research. With a natural 3D view, the microscope is ideal for identification purposes. Precision optics deliver flat distortion-free images to the edge of the field of view, with a very natural color. These are essential for applications such as morphologic comparisons.
Olympus has also introduced a correction ring for the 2 x objective to compensate for aberrations caused by the different refractive indices of air, petri dish covers, and water.
The SZX2 stereo microscope series is optimized for eye and camera, enabling accurate documentation and imaging of live digital sample views. Attaching the Olympus DP71 cooled digital camera produces a very flexible imaging station. This is designed for high resolution documentation (up to 12.5 pixels) and high-speed imaging. Good color reproduction is provided by an advanced PC interface.
