The simple, rapid test, called Clearview Exact, was developed by Inverness Medical (Waltham, MA, USA). The test consists of a dipstick device containing a membrane strip that has separate regions with immoblilized influenza A and B specific monoclonal antibodies and a colored gold conjugate that also consists of specific influenza A and B antibodies.
The new influenza test is scientifically engineered to be easily performed and interpreted by nonlaboratory personnel. It also reduces the burden on clinical budgets by minimizing administration time and identifying appropriate use of antiviral agents. This reduces the number of referrals to hospitals, reduces the use of antibiotics, and lowers the cost of hospital care.
According to the company, infection rates of influenza are increasing across the globe, with a high prevalence of the disease among vulnerable populations such as the young (those six-20 months old), those over 65, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions, especially asthma, other respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva, Switzerland) estimates that 250,000-500,000 deaths are caused each year by influenza.
Inverness noted that the Clearview Exact test demonstrates a high correlation with the gold standard, which is reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The test maximizes the targeted use of antivirals that only work against type A while minimizing the risk of exposing patients who do not have influenza to the side effects and costs of antiviral treatment.
