The new Olympus (Hamburg, Germany) DP71 digital camera uses interface technology and high sensitivity charge coupled device (CCD). In live-mode, full-frame images (1360 x 1024 pixels) can be viewed at 15 frames per second, making it ideal for viewing, dissection, and documentation. Still images, at resolutions up to 12.5 million pixels, can be obtained in under three seconds using Olympus' piezo shift technology.
The DP71 is especially suitable for pathology where faithful color reproduction is required. Images are captured in 12-bit resolution using CCD technology to present authentic, smoothly graduated colors. The microscope also records highly sensitive black and white images for applications such as fluorescence microscopy, where specimens are wholly or partially dark. The custom monochrome mode allows the user to optimize the recording sensitivity according to the wavelength of the fluorescent dye specimen. High sensitivity and low noise are achieved for faint images by Peltier cooling of the CCD chip, allowing long exposure times.
The DP71 software fully supports the functionality of Olympus cell family software resulting in imaging systems suitable for image acquisition, archiving, analysis, and distribution.
