Glycan Markers Predict Crohn's Disease Complications

A study has shown that anti-glycan serologic biomarkers are associated with severe and complicated Crohn's disease (CD) and with the need for surgery.

The anti-glycan serologic markers are part of the IBDX panel of Glycominds Ltd. (Lod, Israel). The panel is currently available for the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease and for Crohn's differential. It includes anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (gASCA), anti-chitobioside carbohydrate antibodies (ACCA), anti-laminariobioside carbohydrate antibodies (ALCA), and anti-mannobioside carbohydrate antibodies (AMCA).

The IBDX panel can be used at onset of the disease and enables prediction of CD in patients months before clinical symptoms appear. Recent studies by researchers at Leuven University hospital (Leuven, Belgium) and Lille University (Lille, France) demonstrated that gASCA, ACCA, and AMCA predict increased severity and complications of CD, such as strictures or fistulas, as well as the need for surgery. There appears to be a correlation between gASCA, ALCA, and AMCA and mutations and genetic variants in innate immunity genes associated with CD.
