Media Formulation Free of Animal Origin

A new facility has been validated for production of media formulation in an animal-free environment. Several pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients have already received material manufactured in the facility.

Invitrogen Corporation (Grand Island, NY, USA) has expanded production capabilities of animal-free advanced granulation technology (AGT) media. It plans to transform 11,000 square feet of existing space on its New York campus for production of AGT media for internal projects, internalization of technology for contract manufacturing abilities, and reduction of manufacturing costs.

The company evaluated more than 800 raw materials involved in AGT production and verified that they were free of animal components. It also created protocols for the manufacture and production environment, stringent requirements for staff gowning, contamination controls such as airlocks, irradiation of clothing and tools, as well as separate locker facilities.

The AGT format has a number of advantages compared to dry powder media. AGT media are complete and require no supplementation or pH adjustment, thus decreasing time in large-scale media and buffer preparations. The new format also improves dissolution rates and reduces the generation of dust, keeping preparation areas safer and lessening the chance of cross-contamination. ATG media increase yield while decreasing total cycle costs.
