Programs for Diabetics Launched in Far East

Access to glucose-monitoring systems as well as comprehensive information about the importance of vigorous glucose monitoring, diet, exercise, and medication are being provided to people in China and South Korea.

These new diabetes programs are being conducted by the BayerAG subgroup of Bayer Healthcare AG (Leverkusen, Germany). There are approximately 40 million people suffering from diabetes in China and less than two million of them are receiving treatment. Bayer has partnered with local community hospitals in Beijing (China) to establish diabetes houses where patients can have access to glucose-monitoring systems and also receive diabetes care and management information. Additional diabetes houses are planned in Shanghai and Guanzhou, which are all areas of high diabetes incidence. Parallel to this effort, Bayer Healthcare is expanding its business activities in the growth markets of Asia by launching its Breeze and Brio blood glucose managing systems in China and South Korea.

Diabetes is widespread in Korea, with more that two million people suffering from the disease in South Korea alone. Bayer is establishing the Bayer Dream Fund program in Korea. The Bayer Dream Fund is an annual contest designed to encourage people with diabetes to achieve their dreams. The fund is already underway in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Korea is the first country in Asia to launch the program.

The Bayer Healthcare blood glucose monitoring systems are easy to use. Only a small drop of blood is needed to attain reliable results in seconds. The Breeze device being introduced in China and South Korea uses a disc that contains 10 test strips. Once the disc has been inserted, the patient can take 10 measurements. The Brio device has the advantage that it is simple to operate, with wide strips that are more convenient for some patients to hold and for bedside use in hospitals.
