Test Determines Genetic Resistance to HIV

A test has been developed that determines if a person is a fast, neutral, or slow progressor to AIDS after human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

The results of the test help individuals infected with HIV know how quickly the virus is likely to cause disease, enabling physicians to decide how aggressive the therapy needs to be for each patient.

The test was developed by Independent Forensics (Jersey City, NJ, USA). It measures the genetics of CCR5 receptors on T-cells and uses a simple buccal swab collection procedure, which can be easily carried out at home. Test results are available in three weeks. CCR5 is the primary HIV receptor in T-cells, and people contain varying amounts of this receptor according to their genetic make-up. The fewer available CCR5 receptors people have, the more likely it is that they will demonstrate a slow progression to AIDS when infected with HIV-1.
