Tests Rapidly Detect Bleeding and Clotting

Two coagulation tests are designed for use in the diagnosis of bleeding and clotting disorders.

Oxoid Ltd (Basingstoke, UK) has extended its range of rapid diagnostic tests to include two coagulation tests. The D-Dimer test and the Thrombo-Wellcotest detect either primary or secondary activation of the fibrinolytic system. Increased levels of fibrinogen or fibrin degradation products are found in conditions such as thromboembolic disease, myocardial infarction, post-operative vein thrombosis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, glomerulonephritis, and certain pregnancy disorders.

D-Dimer detects cross-linked fibrin degradation products, which are markers for secondary fibrinolysis, in plasma or serum. The Thrombo-Wellcotest detects fibrin or fibrinogen degradation products in serum or urine, greatly elevated levels of which are associated with all kinds of thrombotic episodes. When the two tests are used together, they offer a positive predictive value of almost 100%.

These rapid latex agglutination tests provide qualitative or semi-quantitative results within three minutes, ensuring prompt diagnosis and optimal patient care. They are extremely quick and simple to perform and readily fit into routine laboratory testing, saving time and laboratory resources. Results are clearly visible and easy to interpret in normal light, without the need for specialized equipment.
