LIS Installed in Malawi Laboratory

A custom-designed laboratory information system (LIS) has been successfully installed in the University of Carolina's laboratory in Malawi, Africa.

The UNC Project is a collaboration between the University of North Carolina (UNC, Chapel Hill, USA) and the Kamuzu Central Hospital of the Malawi Ministry of Health (KCH, Lilongwe, Malawi). The mission of the project is to identify socially acceptable and relatively inexpensive methods of reducing the risk of HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) through research, to strengthen the local research capacity through training and technology transfers, and to improve care for patients suffering from HIV and AIDS.

Antek Healthcare's (Baltimore, MD, USA) LabDAQ LIS system was designed for the Malawi laboratory. "It was the only system that met all of our criteria,” said Robert Krysiak, the main contact for the UNC Project. The system also offers support features such as the ability to identify special populations, which is important for the lab's research.

Two of Antek's application engineers installed the system in the laboratory facility in Malawi. "One of the great features of LabDAQ that works for our site is that the engineers in the USA are able to help us tailor the LIS to our needs through remote access as we integrate the system,” noted Mr. Krysiak.
