Monitor Measures Organic Substances in Pure Water

A total oxidizable carbon (TOC) monitor can measure from 1 to 999 ppb of organic substances in pure and ultrapure water at an hourly flow rate of up to 200 l/hr, ensuring the quality of testing.

Relatively low TOC levels in purified water affect the outcome of laboratory tests. Therefore, scientists need to regularly measure TOC levels in their high purity water.
Most purification systems are designed with a built-in TOC monitor to ensure regular, on-line measurement of organic substances in the ultrapure water at the time of delivery. The A10 TOC monitor produced by Millipore Bioscience (Billerica, MA, USA) can be used on systems without built-in TOC monitors. This stand-alone monitor can be connected to any high-purity water laboratory system, providing rapid measurement of TOC levels in the water produced.

An accurate TOC measurement is important in applications such as chromatography, in which moderate TOC levels will degrade the baseline quality and reduce the sensitivity of analysis. In addition, the presence of TOC will pollute the chromatography column beads, preventing good mass transfer between the beads and the mobile phase, ultimately shortening the life of the column. In addition, undetermined levels of TOC in ultrapure water used to prepare culture media or buffers will affect cell cultures and electrophoresis separations.
