Bioagent System to Identify Bacteria, Viruses, Toxins

A handheld bioagent identifier is being developed to identify bacteria, viruses, and toxins.

The purpose of the Darpa handheld isothermal silver standard (HISSS) program is to develop a bioidentifier system based on next-generation nucleic acid- and protein-
detection technologies. The system will consist of an instrument, which is based on advanced microelectronics technologies and specialized embedded software, and a series of consumables.

The HISSS instrument will be a handheld battery-operated device that is capable of automatically processing a sample and identifying any bacteria, viruses, and protein toxins present. The consumables will be inexpensive cartridges that contain all of the reagents and other materials needed for an assay, and will not require refrigeration or other special storage. The system will be designed for use by first responders, military personnel, and other similar personnel with a minimum of training.

Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (Los Angeles, CA, USA) will provide more details on the bioagent identifier at the 9th International Detection Technologies Symposium, to be held November 9-10, 2006, in San Diego (CA, USA). Details of the new sample preparation schemes and assays will be provided at the symposium.
