Firm Helps Clients Adopt New Blood-Labeling Standard

Software and services are being provided online to assist in the adoption of a new international blood-labeling standard.

The blood-labeling format provides a comprehensive and flexible system for assigning product codes. New codes are built by specifying a combination of a component class, a modifier, core conditions, and a range of attributes. A unique combination of these values is assigned a product code number that becomes incorporated into the product-description database table, ensuring that the product will be accurately identified in any country in the world that is using the system.

The International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) has revolutionized the information contained in a blood-component label by creating a new labeling standard called ISBT 128. Wyndgate Technologies (El Dorado Hills, CA, USA), a division of Global Med Technologies, is offering expert software and services to help its clients adopt this international standard for blood-component labeling by enrolling them in the Client Access Product Support Section of the company's website.

The new labeling standard relays critical information regarding each blood component in a secure electronic format to help prevent accidental misuse with blood products from multiple countries or facilities. ISBT 128 enables blood products collected in one location to be safely transfused across borders, governments, and healthcare systems. This standard will be useful in multinational disaster relief programs, widespread military operations, and international data stores.

When the requirement to adopt the ISBT 128 blood-labeling standard recently emerged in the United States, Wyndgate envisaged an increased demand for ISBT 128 education and services. The company developed an online educational series and has begun providing consulting services regarding implementing the standard. More than 500 individuals have attended one or more of the online education sessions that the company presented this year.
