Automated Blood Analyzer Cleared by FDA

An automated cell-locating device for the differential count of white blood cells and characterization of red cell morphology has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), replacing the use of manual microscopy.Posted on 20 Apr 2001
Called DiffMaster Octavia, the system is based on software developed by CellaVision (Lund, Sweden) combined with a hardware platform. The system automatically locates and presents images of blood cells on peripheral blood specimens. The operator identifies and verifies the suggested classification of each cell. The system is designed to be used by a skilled operator, trained in the use of the instrument and in the recognition of leukocyte classes.
