Separation of urine and immunotyping by capillary electrophoresis are now available as new applications for the fully automated Capillarys system. The system provides better resolution in the detection and identification of these proteins than traditional methods. A full urine immunotyping profile is obtained using IgG, IgA, and IgM heavy chains and kappa and lambda light chains.
The Capillarys system was produced by Sebia UK (Camberely, UK). The curves obtained using the system are easily interpreted using phoresis software to determine abnormal bands within the urine electrophoretic pattern. Overlay of the reference pattern helps visualization and characterization of the suspected monoclonal component.
Serum control samples or the corresponding patient serum can be overlaid onto the urine results to aid diagnosis. Preparation of the urine samples is easy using the Capillarys equipment. Pure urine samples are centrifuged and any possible interfering salts are removed in a simple dialysis/washing step. Samples can be stored for up to a week at 4?C or at -80?C for a month.
