System Inactivates Pathogens in Platelets and Plasma

A blood system reduces the risk of transfusion-transmitted diseases by inactivating a broad range of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites that may be present in donated blood intended for transfusion. The system inactivates the pathogens in both plasma and platelets using the same illumination device, process, and active compound.

The Intercept plasma system was designed to meet blood center requirements for efficiency, performance, and compatibility with both whole blood and apheresis collections. The efficacy and safety of the plasma system was valuated in approximately 5,000 transfusions.

A product of Cerus Corporation (Concord, CA, USA), the Intercept blood system has received a CE mark, which allows the system to be marketed throughout the European Union. Cerus has also received the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 13485 certification, allowing Cerus to sell the Intercept blood system for platelets and plasma under its own label.
