MRSA Rapidly Detected in Mixed Samples

A new kit rapidly detects methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) even in cases of mixed colonization.

The GenoQuick MRSA kit utilizes MRSA-specific DNA sequences in the Staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SSCmec types 1-V) to enable direct testing without the need for time-consuming culture. A simple dipstick procedure accelerates the detection process with results being generated as an obvious banding pattern on the membrane strips. The presence of both amplification and conjugate controls gives the user confidence in reporting the presence of MRSA from a patient specimen to a sensitivity of 10-15 colony forming units (cfu). No elaborate equipment is required, and the test can easily be incorporated into a routine diagnostic laboratory. The kit is available in either 12 test or 48 test formats, making it suitable for both small volume users and high throughput laboratories.

To ensure valid results, each sample is co-analyzed with an amplification control, which reliably indicates potential inhibition. It identifies a MRSA-specific fragment not present in methicillin-sensitive S aureus (MSSA) or in coagulase-negative staphylococci. Therefore, no pure culture is required and the material can be directly analyzed from the swab.

Supplied by Hain Lifescience (Nehren, Germany), the GenoQuick MRSA assay is user-friendly. Colored solutions prevent pipetting errors, and the simple detection technique largely reduces pipetting effort. Test results from direct samples are available within only 2.5 hr. The test has received the CE Mark.

One of the most important benefits for labs of all sizes is the reduced need for equipment. Initial costs are therefore considerably lower compared to other MRSA assay systems.
