FDA Clears Automated Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Platform for Arthritis Assessment

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is central to evaluating inflammatory arthritis and other joint conditions, but access is limited by workforce shortages and variability in image acquisition. In the United States, many counties lack rheumatology coverage, delaying objective imaging and consistent assessment. Standardized joint scanning remains difficult to scale across busy clinics. A newly cleared system now offers automated scan acquisition and AI-assisted analysis in an end-to-end workflow.
ROPCA (Odense, Denmark) has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for ARTHUR and DIANA, which together form a musculoskeletal ultrasound automation platform. ARTHUR, described as an Arthritis Ultrasound Robot, automatically captures ultrasound images of finger, hand, and wrist joints under healthcare-professional supervision. DIANA then analyzes the acquired images and supports automated report generation, while clinical decisions remain with clinicians.
Together, ARTHUR and DIANA deliver a streamlined workflow that combines consistent image acquisition, artificial intelligence-assisted interpretation, and structured reporting. ARTHUR has been CE-marked since 2022 and has several years of clinical experience across six European countries, including more than 5,400 scans and 83,500 joints. The platform is designed for specialist teams seeking reproducible assessments and operational consistency while maintaining existing clinical responsibilities.
FDA 510(k) clearance enables broader availability of the system to U.S. providers. The announcement comes amid capacity pressures in rheumatology, with cited data indicating that 72% of U.S. counties do not have a single rheumatologist and workforce projections pointing to a substantial supply-demand gap by 2030. With the clearance, the company can take the next step toward making ARTHUR and DIANA available to healthcare providers across the United States.
