Urology Workstation with PSA Test

A new diagnostic workstation for urology incorporates a 15-minute total prostate- specific antigen (total PSA) test, providing a point-of-care test that enables doctors to quickly diagnose prostate cancer or detect recurrences in men already diagnosed with the disease. The workstation was announced during the annual meeting of the American Urological Association in Anaheim (CA, USA).

The new workstation, from Endocare, Inc. (Irvine, CA, USA), utilizes the total PSA test of Qualigen, Inc. (Carlsbad, CA, USA), under the terms of an exclusive five-year agreement between the two companies. The total PSA test is based on Qualigen's FastPack System and measures the blood levels of an antigen that can rise as a prostate tumor grows. Endocare states that it provides equal or better accuracy than the most commonly used PSA testing methods and can eliminate patient anxiety resulting from delays in receiving test results.

"Eliminating the two- to three-day wait in determining a PSA score allows the physician to move down the treatment path faster and provides the patient with a far less stressful diagnostic experience,” notes Paul Mikus, chairman and CEO of Endocare. The test has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
