New Software Aids Breast Cancer Testing

New application software for a fluorescence microscopy system is designed to aid pathologists in their review of key breast cancer tests by enabling them to automate and quantify the analysis of estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER/PR), Ki-67, p53, and AE1/AE3. The software also enhances the existing immunohistochemistry-based Her 2/neu application by providing pathologists with additional scoring mechanisms to assist in the determination of over-expression.Posted on 03 Aug 2001
The microscopy system, called MDS, uses brightfield and fluorescence techniques to detect targeted cancer cells in concentrations as low as one cell among one million other cells. Once detected, the MDS system utilizes proprietary fluorescence analysis software to analyze multiple genetic markers within individual cells or in tissue sections taken from primary tumors. This ability to analyze multiple markers simultaneously allows researchers to develop panels of genetic tests that may be used in the future to select treatments and monitor individual patient responses to therapy. MDS is the product of Applied Imaging (Santa Clara, CA, USA).
"With these new applications, our customers will be able to perform immunohistochemistry analysis on the nucleus, cytoplasm, and membranes of cells in tissue sections,” said Carl Hull, CEO of Applied Imaging.
