Patient Monitor for Diabetes Management

A patient monitor for diabetes management is a pager-sized, single-use device that can perform combinations of immunoassays and general chemistries, measuring up to four different analytes from a single blood or urine sample in eight minutes and presenting quantitative results on a digital display.

Called A1cNow, the new monitor is suitable for use in a doctor's office or by patients at home who have a prescription. It delivers clinically relevant results comparable to central laboratory analysis. The monitor is based on patented technology that integrates miniaturized digital electronics, micro-optics, and solid-state chemistries and is especially designed to allow all of the recommended diabetes tests (HbA1c and microalbumin) and general chemistry analyses to be performed simultaneously.

The A1cNow monitor is the product of Metrika, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA, USA). The company's HbA1c test has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This test indicates average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months and is used to monitor compliance with diabetes treatment. Metrika has under development a MicroalbuminNow creatinine monitor and a LipidsNow cholesterol monitor.
