Myoglobin Test for Rapid Diagnosis of Heart Attack

A new myoglobin test is designed to rapidly diagnose heart attack. The easy-to-use test delivers results in less than 15 minutes.

Called the Ramp Myoglobin Test, the test has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It provides a quantitative measurement of myoglobin levels in a whole blood sample. Myoglobin is one of three commonly utilized cardiac markers that assist in the diagnosis of heart attack and is the first to be released into blood following a heart attack. Tests for the other two, creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobulin (MB), are in late-stage development, says Response Biomedical Corp. (Vancouver, Canada), which developed the Ramp System. The Ramp System, designed for clinical and point-of-care applications, comprises a disposable test cartridge and a portable fluorescence reader. The company is also working on a test for anthrax and prostate cancer.

"FDA clearance validates the performance of the system, providing a level of assurance that RAMP will play an important role in both the clinical and environmental testing fields,” said Bill Radvak, president and CEO of Response Biomedical.
