Hair Assay for Methamphetamine

A radioimmunoassay for the qualitative and semiquantitative detection of methamphetamine and metabolites in hair is designed to identify users of methamphetamine and Ecstasy. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of Ecstasy by young people, often with devastating consequences. The new test has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The test was developed by Psychemedics Corp. (Cambridge, MA, USA). The company's technology allows it to offer a personal drug history over a 90-day period. Its test has been proven 5-10 times more effective than urinalysis, according to Psychemedics.

"The combination of sporadic use patterns and rapid clearance from the body make these drugs difficult to detect through available urine testing,” said Ray Kubacki, CEO and president of Psychemedics. "Our hair test is particularly suited for the workplace, criminal justice, and medical applications.” The company is marketing the test to businesses, agencies, and institutions interested in stopping the use of illegal substances.
