Urinalysis Test for Kidney Disease

A new test for kidney disease measures the urinary concentration of protein and creatinine, the only dipstick test that currently estimates the protein-creatinine ratio. This ratio corrects for variations in the concentration of the urine, which results in a more-accurate reading.

The test offers several benefits over current urinalysis tests, says Bayer Diagnostics (Tarrytown, NY, USA), the developer. The test is called the Multistix Pro Reagent Strips. The test can provide results within 60 seconds when read by a Clinitek 50 analyzer, in contrast to the 24 hours needed in current testing, and the test's accuracy improves diagnosis. The launch of the test coincides with the release of new guidelines by the US National Kidney Foundation (NKF) that urge doctors to identify and treat kidney disease in patients at risk.

"This new testing technology will help the medical community implement our vision of detecting kidney disease when there are multiple options to prevent its advancement,” said John Davis, CEO of the NKF.
