In clinical trials, the test was shown to provide new information about heart disease risk that was independent of traditional risk factors such as blood cholesterol, says the developer, International Medical Innovations, Inc. (IMI, Toronto, Canada). The test is called Cholesterol 1, 2, 3 and it was chosen to be included in a large clinical study sponsored by the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). This study will evaluate a variety of methods for detecting heart disease before symptoms appear, including skin cholesterol.
