HCV Genotype Panel Aids Lab Quality Control

A nucleic acid hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype panel is designed as a new quality control product for laboratories conducting genotypic analyses to identify genetic variants of HCV. The panel was introduced at the 18th Clinical Virology Symposium in Clearwater, FL (USA).

The HCV genotype panel is comprised of specimens containing HCV genotypes 1-4. These controls help laboratories to correctly identify and report the appropriate genotypes in their sequence or hybridization-based HCV genotype testing. The panel, called NAP HCV Genotype Panel, was developed by AcroMetrix Corp. (Benicia, CA, USA).

The genotype of HCV is an independent predictor of sustained virologic response to antiviral drugs such as interferon and ribavirin. Clinical studies have shown that patients infected with genotypes 2 or 3 are more likely to respond to drug therapy than patients with genotype 1, the most prevalent form in the United States. Identification of the HCV genotype infecting a patient enables doctors to tailor therapy to that genotype. To ensure accuracy, consistency, and reproducibility in testing laboratories, genotyping methods need to become standardized.
