Quick Disposable Test for Strep

A new one-step, disposable test for Streptococcus A (Strep A) requires only a swab of the throat and provides results in five minutes. The test has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Strep A infection can result in a treatable illness such as "strep throat,” but the bacteria can also cause severe and even life-threatening diseases, including necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. This makes quick identification important. The new point-of-care test, called EZ-StrepA, allows a doctor to make a diagnosis while the patient is in the office. After collection of a throat sample, the swab is placed in a solution in which the EZ-StrepA test strip is immersed, and the result is read after five minutes. The test is the product of Biomerica, Inc. (Newport Beach, CA, USA).
