Drug Susceptibility Test for Tuberculosis

A susceptibility test for tuberculosis is designed to monitor the growth of M tuberculosis by comparing a drug-free tube to tubes containing the drugs to be tested. The test has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Posted on 28 Jun 2002
The test, developed by BD Diagnostic Systems (Sparks, MD, USA), is done with the use of the company's BD Bactec Mgit 960 Sire Kit. Throughout testing, the Bactec Mgit instrument continually monitors tubes for increased fluorescence, indicating the presence of active microorganisms. A fully automated reading is provided, which indicates a "susceptible” or "resistant” interpretation for the drugs commonly used to treat tuberculosis. These are streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol.
BD Diagnostics says its system offers enhanced safety compared to other methods by using plastic tubes and employing no sharp-edged instruments. Other advantages include high capacity automation and continuous monitoring, the company stsates.
