Automated Tests for Homocysteine

An assay for homocysteine that aids in the diagnosis and treatment of patients suspected of having homocysteinuria or hyperhomocysteinemia, a risk factor for heart disease, is now available on automated systems.

Homcysteine is an amino acid produced by the normal breakdown of protein in blood. While its exact role in cardiovascular disease is not well understood, studies have shown several different mechanisms where it promotes the formation of atherosclerotic plaque, which obstructs blood flow through the arteries.

The homocysteine assay is now available on the ACS:180 and the Advia Centaur systems of Bayer Diagnostics (Tarrytown, NY, USA) and was developed by the company using patented technology from Axis-Shield (Dundee, Scotland).
