A new portable, broad-menu clinical chemistry blood analyzer is designed for near-patient testing in any setting, including an ambulance or mobile hospital, and provides results within minutes.

The analyzer, called Piccolo, features built-in quality control and calibration. The intelligent Quality Control system automatically performs more than 100 quality control checks on each sample, including daily dual-level quality control. To ensure integrity of results, the analyzer self-calibrates with each run. Because the analyzer is portable and weighs only 15 pounds, it can easily be carried to any patient location, averting the need to send a blood sample to a central laboratory. This can help to eliminate errors caused in sample handling, transcription, and transportation.

"It is easy to use and operators need only minimal training to produce reliable, laboratory-quality results,” says Achim Henkel, director, sales and marketing, Abaxis, Inc. (Union City, CA, USA), which manufactures the analyzer. The company reports that the analyzer utilizes high-tech centrifugal technology evolved by scientists at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
