Hemoglobin Testing System for Doctors

A fast, accurate total hemoglobin testing system intended for use in a doctor's office consists of a portable, battery-powered instrument and single-use test strips that provide results in less than 30 seconds.

The system requires only a small sample size of 15 microliters. Due to its small size, it can be taken to the patient and used anywhere in a doctor's office or clinic. When a drop of blood is placed on the test strip, it disperses immediately within the membrane as it is exposed to the reagent. This causes the red cells to release their hemoglobin. The system's optical detectors measure the change in the membrane reflectance and calculate total hemoglobin concentration. The results appear on the meter's data screen. Error codes are displayed if problems occur. The system, called Hgb Pro, is the product of International Technidyne Corp. (ITC, Edison, NJ, USA).

"Hgb Pro offers physicians results comparable in accuracy to clinical laboratories in a simple, more cost-effective manner, with the convenience of a point-of-care instrument,” said Lawrence Cohen, president of ITC. "Rapid total hemoglobin results will enable physicians to quickly identify possible anemia or internal bleeding for quick intervention.”
