New software makes it easier for laboratorians to archive, retrieve, and handle electronic images. The software also helps them to archive digital images that are more versatile, that can be dealt with quickly and easily, and analyzed more precisely.

The software, called the Leica Image Manager, is from Leica Microsystems AG (Heerbrugg, Switzerland). The Leica IM 50 or IM 100 are good programs to use to learn about digital archiving, while the IM 500 and IM 1000 meet the high standards demanded by professional image management in complex networks. The database can be configured to suit the needs of individual laboratories. Special application modules include Measurement, Image Comparison, Timelapse, Image Assembly, MultiFocus, and Presentation. These can be expanded at any time, and they provide an arrangement that is forward-looking and task-oriented.

A related product now available from Leica is an integrated video module for Leica M stereomicroscopes (IC A) and DML microscopes (ICC A) offers cost-effective analog cameras with high-quality digital control. These modules enable the user to see images on the monitor and to record them, expanding their benefit. The module fits directly to the microscope, resulting in a compact unit with which the user can alternate between viewing down the binocular tube and observation on the monitor.
