The polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay, called TaqScreen, is designed to prevent the spread of deadly viruses through the transfusion of blood and blood products. In September 2002, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, Atlanta, GA, USA) called on diagnostic industry to have a blood screening test for West Nile virus ready for the 2003 mosquito season because the incidence of infection is expected to increase in 2003. The CDC has indicated that a small number of West Nile virus cases had likely spread through blood transfusions and tissue donations in 2002.
