Quick Blood Test Detects Heart Attack Early

A study has shown that a new blood test for two blood serum proteins that appear to reflect the early onset of a heart attack has a 99% accuracy rate and produces results in only five minutes. These results are reported in the August 1, 2003, issue of the Journal of Proteome Research.

In the study, researchers focused on two proteins found in blood serum. One of the proteins, C3f, was discovered as a heart attack marker for the first time and is known to be associated with inflammation. The other is a well-known protein called fibrinogen peptide A, which is involved in the clotting process. Thus, the presence of these proteins in blood signals the beginning of a cascade of inflammatory and clotting events that eventually lead to a full-blown heart attack.

The test uses mass spectrometry to identify the proteins by their electrochemical fingerprint. The need for mass spectrometry may, however, hinder the success of the new test, note the researchers. Mass spectrometry equipment is commonly available only in research settings, although several other companies are experimenting with mass spectrometry tests for diagnosing other diseases.

"I think this test will dramatically improve the ability of physicians to rapidly and unambiguously diagnose heart attacks,” said John Marshall, Ph.D., chief investigator and a consultant for Syn X Pharma, Inc. (Toronto, Canada), which is developing the test.
