Transdermal Glucose Sensor Okay for Pediatric Use

A study of a prototype system that continuously measures glucose levels in the transdermal body fluid (TDF) of diabetics has shown that the system can monitor glucose levels in children as well as in adults. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in New Orleans (LA, USA).

The TDF is collected through an array of microscopic holes, or micropores, created with a laser in the outer layer of skin and measured with a glucose sensor. The technology can be adapted to measure glucose continuously or periodically. The study involved 50 children between the ages of seven and 17 and was designed to determine of there were any significant differences in device performance in a pediatric population vs an adult population. Of the devices that tracked, 91% of the readings were within the clinically acceptable zones when compared to blood readings. Adequate fluid flow was reported in almost all study participants. The monitoring system is the product of SpectRx, Inc. (Norcross, GA, USA).

"Based on the study conclusions, we feel that the SpectRx system potentially could have a beneficial impact on the management of diabetes in children and adults,” said Peter Chase, M.D., prinicipal investigator of the study, sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, GA, USA).
