Genotyping Sample Collection System

The SAFEspot Blood Collection Card is designed to simplify sample collecting for genotyping. The system will facilitate the routine use of genetic analysis to prescribe a particular drug for a particular patient in personalized medicine and will also aid the use of genetic analysis in drug development.

SAFEspot is based on a proprietary adsorbent matrix. Past genotyping studies have used liquid blood as the source of genetic material, but collecting venous blood requires trained staff and can be unpleasant for patients. In contrast, SAFEspot uses a single finger stick blood sample, which makes collection painless. The dried blood sample is stable, sterile, and safe, and can be shipped at ambient temperature rather than frozen. Sufficient DNA can be captured from each card for more than 200 separate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), micro-satellite, or other genetic analyses. SAFEspot was developed by DxS Ltd. (Manchester, UK).

The DxS service is based on proprietary Scorpions technology that allows rapid and reliable polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based genotyping. Genotyping analyses for personalized medicine would be further facilitated by a global network of accredited laboratories that would operate in partnership with a pharmaceutical company to provide local pharmacogenetic testing.
