System to Promote International Lab Testing Standards

A comprehensive international laboratory test ordering and reporting system (ILTORS) in three languages has been integrated into NetCare 7.0, a medical information collection, management, and analysis software program.

ILTORS is available in English, French, and Spanish. NetCare users will access ILTORS to review and order precise tests for more than 150 clinical diseases. Users can peruse a list of system-recommended procedures, or directly order tests based on a medical diagnosis. ILTORS then records the status of the tests, reconciles outstanding and completed tests, updates where appropriate, and reports results. The system minimizes misapplication of laboratory tests while maximizing diagnostic efficiency and effectiveness. SAO Data Integration Strategies, which integrated ILTORS into NetCare, is a subsidiary of NetImpact Holdings (San Antonio, TX, USA).

ILTORS is based on the integration and enhancement of internationally accepted laboratory testing standards and disease coding systems, including CUMUL, an information project initiated in 1997 in Geneva (Switzerland) by the European Laboratory System. SAO Data Integration Strategies has expanded CUMUL's original 3,500 tests to more than 6,000 tests with the appropriate translations. This expanded laboratory test database was then integrated with the Dwyer clinical disease laboratory test assignment protocol, utilized by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, Atlanta, GA, USA). These protocols have also been expanded by SAO to include additional diseases of significant concern to the international community, based on disease surveillance statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva, Switzerland).
